Frequently Asked Questions About Pelvic Health

Discover answers to our most commonly asked questions at our pelvic health practice in Ann Arbor. Find clear, transparent information about our approach, scheduling, and what to expect.

Do you provide pelvic floor therapy for all genders in Ann Arbor?
Yes. At Arbor Pelvic Health & Wellness, we provide expert, inclusive pelvic floor therapy for men, women, and non-binary individuals in Ann Arbor. We believe that everyone deserves specialized, trauma-informed care for their bowel, bladder, and pelvic floor needs. Regardless of your gender identity, our goal is to provide a safe, welcoming, and affirming environment where you can regain your confidence and return to the activities that matter most.
Is there an age requirement for pelvic floor therapy?
Yes, we treat anyone ages 18+. We have made exceptions for minors when accompanied by an adult so please reach out so we can figure out how to best support you. While there is no age cut off for pelvic floor therapy there are some geriatric conditions that may impact prognosis and we’d be happy to discuss further when you reach out.
Are the pelvic floor therapists at your clinic female?
Yes, all of our providers at our Ann Arbor practice are female. However, we serve patients of all genders. We understand that privacy and cultural comfort are incredibly important. If you have any specific preferences regarding appointment times, or if you have concerns about the clinic environment, please let us know when you reach out. We are more than happy to work with you to ensure your visit feels private, secure, and fully respectful of your needs.
What to expect at your first pelvic floor therapy appointment in Ann Arbor?
At Arbor Pelvic Health & Wellness, your first visit is a dedicated 60-minute session held in a private, supportive treatment room. We prioritize listening; we begin by hearing your story, understanding your unique symptoms, and walking through a comprehensive health history together.

Following our conversation, we perform a gentle external assessment of the muscles in your hip, back, and pelvis. Please note that an internal exam is always a choice and never a requirement and will only be performed if you are comfortable. By the end of your visit, we will create a clear, custom treatment plan and provide you with initial exercises to start your journey toward healing.

What to expect at your follow-up pelvic floor therapy appointment in Ann Arbor?
Our follow-up sessions are 60 minutes long, ensuring you have the time to receive dedicated, one-on-one care without feeling rushed. Every session is fully personalized based on your individual progress since our last visit. Depending on your needs, your treatment may include targeted manual therapy, neuromuscular re-training, ongoing education, and progressive exercises designed to help you regain confidence, manage symptoms, and return to the activities you love.
What should I wear to my pelvic floor therapy appointment?
You do not need any special clothing for your sessions at Arbor Pelvic Health & Wellness. We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. Athletic attire is not required, so please feel free to wear whatever makes you feel most relaxed and comfortable during your visit. We want you to focus entirely on your healing, not your wardrobe.
Can I bring my baby to my pelvic floor therapy appointment?
Absolutely! We know how precious your little one and your time is. We love helping parents navigate their recovery with their little ones in tow. We have bouncers and loungers on-site to make your visit at our Ann Arbor clinic as easy and stress-free as possible. Because we operate in private treatment rooms, you are also welcome to bring older siblings if that makes your care more accessible.
What should I know about an internal pelvic floor exam?
An internal assessment is a clinical tool used by our highly trained therapists to evaluate the function of your pelvic floor muscles through the vaginal canal or the rectum. An internal exam is always a choice, never a requirement. During your visit at our Ann Arbor practice, we will discuss the benefits of this assessment with you and if you prefer to skip it we have alternative methods to assess and treat your pelvic floor. Your comfort is our top priority.
Can I still attend pelvic floor therapy if I am on my cycle?
Absolutely- there is no need to cancel your appointment. We are very experienced in working with patients throughout every phase of their cycle. If you aren’t comfortable with internal work, we can easily adjust your treatment plan to focus on gentle, external techniques such as abdominal massage, breathwork, and targeted exercises which can often help relieve menstrual symptoms like cramping, bloating, and low back pain. Your comfort is our top priority, so please just let us know your preference when you arrive
What is the cost of pelvic floor therapy at Arbor Pelvic Health & Wellness?
We believe in complete transparency so there are no surprise medical bills and you will know exactly what your investment is before you begin. Our Initial Pelvic Therapy Evaluation is $250 and our Follow-Up Pelvic Therapy sessions are $200. Payment is due at the time of service and for your convenience we accept all major credit cards as well as HSA and FSA cards.
Do I need a doctor’s referral for pelvic floor therapy in Ann Arbor?
No, you do not. Michigan is a “direct access” state which means you are legally allowed to see a physical therapist without a prescription or referral from a doctor. You can schedule your appointment at our Ann Arbor practice at any time. If you plan to submit a “superbill” to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement, we recommend contacting your insurance provider to see if they require a referral for their specific reimbursement process but it is not required for your care with us.
How do I use my insurance for pelvic floor therapy, and what is a superbill?
Because we are an out-of-network provider, we do not bill insurance companies directly. Instead we can provide a “superbill” at the end of your session which is a detailed invoice containing all the clinical codes your insurance provider needs to determine if your visits are eligible for reimbursement. To see if your specific plan covers our Ann Arbor pelvic therapy services, we recommend calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card and asking about your “out-of-network physical therapy” benefits. We are happy to provide the necessary documentation to help you access those benefits.
Do you accept Medicare for pelvic floor therapy in Ann Arbor?
Because Arbor Pelvic Health & Wellness operates as a private-pay practice, our ability to provide care for Medicare beneficiaries depends on the specific type of service you are seeking. Some wellness, education, and prevention-focused services may be available through direct payment. However, if you are seeking treatment for a medical condition, Medicare regulations may require a different process. We are happy to discuss your individual situation and help you understand your options for accessing our specialized care in Ann Arbor.
